Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Addresses Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Matches from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, suggested that the city was prepared for a dispute with President Donald Trump concerning his assertion that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated 22 miles south-west of the city.

Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to address criticism from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." President Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can undo it.

She added, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."

Mayor Wu also remarked, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." She finished by stressing her commitment for the Boston, saying, "Ten toes down for Boston."

The President's Comments and FIFA Role

Earlier this week, Infantino was photographed with Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the White House and given World Cup and club championship awards to the president as presents.

Earlier, Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that included a police car being burned. He responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the head of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Past Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has made previous comments that he would have the same conversation with Infantino about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across North America.

The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
