Apex Legends' Niche Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers have an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's highly fluid movement can rejoice to learn that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on Nov. 4.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when climbing over obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially been a feature of Apex Legends for some time, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by pro gamers in competitive play or esports competitions. In this update, the team is making it easier for players of all skill levels to execute these tricky speed-boosts.

"This technique have been in the game for some time, but executing it isn't easy to pull off and a player might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," the designer explains. "We're adding a visual cue so users can easily see the timing to activate the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the feature and adding new ways to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a previously obscure technique available to everyone? Principal designer the development lead says the team aims for gamers to experience empowerment — even those who are new.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, observed what the community execute, and we said, 'How can we provide some of this power to more players?'" the designer clarifies. "Since currently, certain techniques are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and execute within precise timings. So we said, 'What if we make a more official implementation?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and Valkyrie receiving buffs to help keep them in motion. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and the Gravity Lift will boost players upward much quicker than before. Her defensive walls feature a roof and the ability to provide movement bonuses to those nearby. However it's aerial this Legend who's getting the most attention now, with multiple tweaks implemented to enhance her as more potent, faster, and deadlier.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time has arrived," states Legend designer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt she was top-tier previously, but with the introduction of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. It was a really great opportunity for us to revisit multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially restore her to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To reclaim Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team assessed all her skills and implemented significant modifications. Her jetpack received improvements, increasing her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves regenerates three times faster, enabling the player to remain longer aloft. Now she won't take damage from her own Missile Swarm, which has also been upgraded to tag enemies who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive skill — which lifts teammates into the air for redeployment or retreat — requires much less time to fire up. She's also getting some new perk choices that users can choose to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, this location, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and makes claiming the high ground more manageable. The developers state the game Season 27 is all about giving players the tools required to compete in matches.

"Essentially, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," explains principal designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
